Personality Rendering

Here, we had to gather various items that represent our personalities. Then we had to create a diorama with the objects and make a rendering of the display.

Italy Cubism

This is another Breadth portfolio piece, where I used Georges Braque's style of cubism. I incorporated Italy because I am Italian, and it is a big part of my family.

Little Girl Rendering

This is a rendering I did Sophomore year, and it is also a piece for my Breadth portfolio.

Monet Style

This is one of my Breadth pieces. I had to mimic a style of an artist, but create my own image.

Gesso Piece

For this piece, we were asked to right a story that is meaningful to us on poster paper. We had to completely cover the poster with writing in any font and in any direction. Then we cover it with gesso and taped the spots that we wanted to keep readable. Then we were to think of an image from the story that we could create on top of the gesso surface. For my project, I chose the memory of my 18th birthday when my friends and I camped out in my friend's backyard. I wrote down the story and on top of the gessoed surface I made a collage of fire using small squares of construction paper. When I was done, I felt it was missing something, so I got a plastic stencil of a small square and made small squares all around the outside of the fire. This created a huge cubist them.
For this assignment, I would give myself a 4. It has the range of 2-D design principles, like color, shape, contrast, balance, and emphasis. The work is an original idea that portrays the story well. The work expresses a small part of the story. The image could have been different so that it would fit the point of the story a little bit better. The work does engage the onlooker and the person can see certain phrases in the story, that were not gessoed, and that share key parts in the story. Overall, the piece is good.

Architectural Photography

This week, we had to take photos of architecture that we find interesting. Most of my pictures of a set of business buildings. Others I took around my house. We had to take pictures that emphasized the different elements of design, like balance, contrast and emphasis. We took as many photos as we could, and narrowed them down to the best of the batch.
For this assignment, I would give myself a 5. It shows the variety of different elements. It shows line, shape, contrast, space, color, emphasis, and balance. The photographs are originals and shows the different way the elements are manipulated. The photos also show a confidence in the photos. The lines of the buildings help make the pieces look dynamic, and they engage the onlooker. The photos of architecture in my home are a little more simple, and some could have been taken from a different perspective. The lamp, for instance, does show some contrast, but the white overpowers the black and so it washes out the piece as a whole. Overall, the photos are strong breadth pieces.

Visual Pun

This week, we did a piece called visual pun. We had to choose a one or two-word pun that could be illustrated in any medium. I chose "pancake", or the way I portrayed it "pan-cake". I used colored pencil and graphite pencil for this piece. I probably would have changed one thing. I would have done the pan a little differently, maybe a different shape and more value.
For this assignment, I would give myself a 4. It shows a variation of different elements, such as color, contrast, value, shape, and form. It shows originality in both the idea and the way the idea is expressed. The cake has a lot of value and bright colors, but the pan could have been shaded a little better and maybe even done a little smaller so that there would be more focus on the cake than the pan. Overall, the work is good.

Finished Anatomy Photomontage

Here is the finished product of my anatomy project. We were supposed to make a photomontage incorporating the human anatomy. I tried relate the Sistine Chapel's God giving life to Adam. I drew both hands and found the background image online. I also added a verse from the Genesis on the bottom left.
For this piece, I would give myself a 5 because it does show thoughtful investigation of the 2-D design elements. It has color, contrast, line, type, and value. It shows a range of original ideas, and even though it is a variation of a previous work, it still shows my "voice" and my own perspective of the image. The piece does show a variety of interpretations, and it is, overall, and strong breadth piece.

Hand

This is for the new anatomy project we are currently doing in class. We have to make a photomontage incorporating the human anatomy in some way. This is just part of my project and I will post the rest later this week!

Contrast Pieces

Here are some pieces I did for fun. What I did is I took images from my favorite bands and I added their names on their pictures. I used transfer paper to transfer the picture on the board, and then I painted it.

Logos

I did these two logos separately, one junior year(top) and the other(bottom) senior year. For the first one, I was asked to create a logo that expressed my future business if I were to have one. I couldn't chose between architecture or animation, so I tried to incorporate both. I also have a stationary project that goes with this that I will post later on. For the second one, I wanted to express more of the graphic design or typography approach. I love typography, so I used an exercise we learned in class by putting our initials in big letters and connecting the other letters of our name to the giant initials. The surrounding letters have to be different kinds of type.

Artist Trading Cards

For this assignment, we had to make 17 artist trading cards. This is an international project that is done in many schools around the globe. Each student makes a certain amount of cards and then, once everyone is done, we trade all but two away to our classmates. Once we go to college, we can trade with other students and so on. It was so much fun and now I have a whole new set of cards.
For this assignment, I would give myself a 5 because there are many 2-D design principles used such as line, shape, color, value, shading, and contrast. My cards are original ideas and not made with superficial decision making. The cards are not themed, but still express a variety of expressive qualities. Some of my best cards, above, are engaging as well as technically strong. The cards could have been a little more clean when I was painting so they wouldn't have been so choppy looking. The cards could have been a little more uniform instead of just painting whatever came to the mind. Overall, the top cards are good.

Memory Book Pages

For this project, we were asked to create a book filled with our favorite memories. We could use any medium we wanted as long as we filled the whole book. Here are some of my favorite pages from this assignment.
For this assignment I would give myself an overall 4 because they do explore the 2-D design principles, and express and innovative thinking. The problem is that there aren't as many 2-D elements explored as there should be. The bowling birthday square page would be my favorite because it shows the most confidence in expressing my ideas. The art page could have been done in a different way that might have made the page more engaging. The ideas that the pages are trying to convey are apparent. The bowling page has a lot more going on than the others and might be a little too busy. But, overall, the pieces  are OK.
